About comedy in San Francisco
The Punch Line is the Financial District room, a short walk from the Embarcadero. Cobb's is up on Columbus Avenue, in the North Beach blocks between downtown and the Wharf. Most of the shows on this page are at one of those two clubs: weekend headliners, weeknight sets, and the kind of bill where the opener matters as much as the name on the marquee. When a comic wants more seats, the date moves into a theater. The Masonic on Nob Hill, the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina, Bimbo's 365 Club, and Marines' Memorial Theatre all turn up for those nights. They are not club rooms. They are seated or general-admission theaters that add standup when a tour comes through the Bay Area.
That split is the useful part of the page. If you want to sit close and watch someone work a small room, filter your attention toward the Punch Line and Cobb's. If the name on the bill usually plays theaters, check the Masonic and the Palace of Fine Arts before you assume the clubs are the only option in town.
New San Francisco dates get posted between those rooms as tours confirm. The FindStandup alert under this intro emails you when another show is added, which is an easier way to watch both clubs than refreshing the list before the weekend.
